Siera Donovan
Student Intern
Siera is a student intern providing school-based services in the West Yellowstone School District
Hello there! I am excited to introduce myself as a second-year graduate student in Montana State University’s marriage, couples, and family counseling program. I operate from the foundational belief that the quality of our relationships shapes the quality of our lives. As a 6th generation Montanan, born and raised in Mission Valley, the values of community and family have been instilled in me. I believe children and teens are often misunderstood because of the challenges that naturally occur with communication. It is important to me that young people feel listened to, accepted, and appreciated for exactly who they are. I aim to empower and be a support, perspective challenger, and advocate for the children and families in this community.
As a person-centered counselor, my overarching goal is to develop a genuine, empathetic relationship with each of my clients that allows them and me to show up authentically and honestly in our work together. Formally trained in psychology and human development, I have worked in a handful of roles: preschool teacher, youth case manager, and child protection specialist. These roles have allowed me to support all members of the family system in diverse ways and shown me how so often communication is the roadblock in our relationships.
My counseling approach focuses on making the unsaid said. Utilizing person-centered counseling strategies, I aim to increase my clients awareness and understanding of themselves. I want to be a collaborator as you navigate the exploration into the struggles and successes of your life. Through our exploration, my hope is that you discover compassion, love, and trust in who you really are and what you really want out of this life. And learn the tools that will allow you to communicate that knowing to others so that healthier, more honest connections can be built.
As an avid adventurer- passionate about backpacking, rafting, skiing, hunting, and kiteboarding – I believe there is so much power in being in tune and connected with our bodies and nature. This is why I also integrate mindfulness and bottom-up - body-based approaches into my counseling. I have provided individual counseling services to adults and children through the Health and Human Development Clinic at MSU in Bozeman and I am a proud participant in the Rural Mental Health Preparation/Practice Pathway at MSU, which prepares graduate students to serve as counselors in rural communities. Being from a rural community in Montana myself, I have experienced firsthand the difficult challenges and beautiful benefits that are frequently so present in a small town. I am beyond excited and so grateful to have the opportunity to work in the school in West Yellowstone and support this unique and special community!
